Home, like other European cities, to great art, cathedrals, and history, Spain seems to hum with an exotic undertone that the rest of Western Europe cannot boast. Madrid captures the flavor of Spain and holds it in a city structure. When visiting, these activities are worth the vacationer’s precious time:
1. Palacio Real (Royal Palace)
No longer an official royal residence, the Palace is open to the public. Travelers may tour some of the 2000 rooms, filled to bursting with elaborate décor and treasures.

2. Museo del Prado
The relatively small entrance fee is the inverse of the grand scale of this famous museum. The works of many Spanish artists, from Goya to El Greco, are found here, alongside masterworks of artist from throughout Europe.

3. Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia
This museum is a haven for lovers of 20th century art. The museum contains the likes of Dali and Miro, and its most famous piece is Picasso’s large war work Guernica.

4. Plaza Mayor
This large square provides the people of Madrid (visitors and residents alike) with a natural meeting-place and starting point for many excursions through the city. The symmetry of the buildings in the vast open space is a sturdy façade that looks down on the movement of people. The cafes are a good spot for people-watching, or resting after a day of sightseeing.

5. Parque del Buen Retiro
This beautiful oasis was originally a royal retreat. The two remaining original buildings are now museums. Other worthwhile spots are two artificial lakes, and the Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace).

6. Corral de la Moreria
Don’t leave Spain without seeing a display of flamenco. This nightclub has performances every evening, portraying all of the energy of a culture that often seems nocturnal.

7. Tapas Tasting
Taste the distinctive culture of Spain by dining like the locals. Dinner does not properly start in Madrid until the short hours before midnight, but the nibbling begins much earlier. Move from spot to spot, sampling all the succulent delicacies the city has to offer. Tascas pepper the entire city, so visitors are never far from a taste of tapas. The Plaza Mayor is a good place to start.

Madrid is an insomniac’s paradise. Day or night, there are sights, sounds, aromas, and tastes of an ancient and lively culture.
